How do you know it’s time for an eye test?

As you plan for the new year, it’s also time to pay attention to your eyes, no matter if you wear glasses or not. Your eyes slowly change over time so you might not even notice that you don’t see as well as you used to.

Having eye tests is also important for children since being able to see on the board is key to understanding what’s going on in class and doing well at school!

Signs your eyes need help

You might want to go for an eye test if you:

  • Struggle to read signs or road names
  • Have blurry vision
  • Don’t see well at night
  • Feel that your eyes are tired all the time
  • Often have headaches
  • Feel pressure behind your eyes
  • See bright rings around lights
  • Squint when you try to see better

If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, you should go for an eye test at least once every two years to make sure your eyewear is still right for your eyes.

Your cover for eye care

We partner with Preferred Provider Negotiators, PPN for short, to bring you the Optical Benefit that pays for eye care such as eye tests; glasses (frames and clear lenses including lens enhancements) or contact lenses. You should visit an optician in the PPN network for the best cover. You can find a PPN optometrist on their website.

Your cover depends on your Benefit Option:

  • Standard Option: You only have cover for eye care in the PPN network every 24 months.
  • Comprehensive and Classic Options: You can visit a non-PPN optometrist, but we only pay up to the rate we pay a PPN optometrist. If the optometrist you visit charges more than our rate, you have to pay the rest of the bill yourself.

Questions to have in mind when consulting with your optometrist:

  • What will my co-payment be if I go for more expensive frames?
  • Will lens coatings increase the price of my glasses?
  • Will I incur any additional costs at the optometrist outside of the consultation fee and the actual cost of the glasses or contact lenses (i.e. any additional tests, for example, a retinal examination).

There are limits to these benefits. To find out what benefits for eye care you have available, log in to www.yourremedi.co.za or the Remedi app, or call us on 0860 116 116.
