TFG Health: We answer your questions about chosen GPs

From 1 January 2019, members on TFG Health (formerly Plan A) and their dependants have to choose two GPs in the KeyCare Network to visit. We call them your “chosen GPs”. You have to go to them whenever you need to see a doctor or if you need them to refer you to a specialist.

You don’t have to pay your chosen GP when you visit them. They send us the account and we pay them directly as your chosen GP is part of the KeyCare Network and you’ve let us know they are your chosen GP. If you visit any other GP, you have to pay them yourself.

Since this is new for 2019, we’d like to answer some common questions.

When do I have to choose my GP?

You have to choose a GP before you see them for the first time.

You can start visiting your new GP on the 1st of the month after you told us who they are. For example, if you choose your GP in February 2019, they will only be on our system as your chosen GP on 1 March 2019.

Do all members of my family have to choose the same GP?

No, you can each have your own chosen GP. Each person on your membership has to choose a GP before they see them for the first time in 2019. The whole family can also choose to use one GP.

Do I only have one GP?

No, you can choose two GPs. Sometimes you might want to see a doctor close to your office, other times close to home or school. We don’t want to stop you from doing that, so each person on your membership can choose two GPs. We call the first GP you choose your “primary GP” and the second your “secondary GP”.

How do I choose my GP?

You have to choose a GP before you see them for the first time. Since you have to choose a network GP, please call us on 0860 123 077 so we can help you choose a GP in our network.

What happens if I can’t see my primary or secondary GP?

If both your chosen GPs are busy or if you’re on holiday, you may not be able to visit your chosen GP. To make sure you still get the care you need, you are entitled to four visits to a non-chosen GP in South Africa.

If the doctor charges the Scheme Rate, we pay them directly and you don’t need to do anything. After the four non-chosen GP visits, you have to pay non-chosen GPs yourself.
