MRI and CT scans

Learn more about MRI and CT scans

When you think of X-rays, you probably think of broken bones and black-and-white images. This kind of X-ray is sometimes called 'basic radiology'. Sometimes your doctor needs to see what is going on inside you in more detail. That's where 'specialised radiology' like computed tomography (CT) scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) come in. A CT scan uses a combination of X-rays and a computer while an MRI uses a large magnet and radio waves to create pictures of your organs, bones and other tissues. A healthcare provider can use the images to diagnose anything from torn ligaments to tumours.

How we pay for CT and MRI scans

Only you and your doctor can decide if it is necessary to go for a CT scan or MRI. UKZN Medical Scheme pays for the first 30% of a CT scan or MRI up to a maximum of R3 000 from the General Benefit Pool. We cover the rest of the account for the scan up to R29 450 for a person each year from the Hospital Benefit. To get the most out of your benefits, a designated service provider has to do the scan. If the CT scan or MRI shows that you have a condition that is on the list of Prescribed Minimum Benefits, we pay for the scan in full from your radiology benefit as long as you use a designated service provider.
