Dr Nozipho Sangweni is appointed as the Principal Officer of Discovery Health Medical Scheme

The Board of Trustees of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme (DHMS) has announced the appointment of Dr Nozipho Sangweni as the Principal Officer of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme effective 01 January 2017. Dr Sangweni will take over from Mr Milton Streak who has decided to step down after eight years of tenure.

Dr Sangweni is currently the Chief Medical Officer of the Discovery Health Medical Scheme having joined the Scheme office in October 2015. She has an extensive knowledge of the healthcare and medical industries having worked as Chief Operations Officer at National Health Laboratory Service, Chief Medical Officer at South African Airways and other positions within healthcare and aviation medicine before joining DHMS. Dr Sangweni also served as a DHMS Trustee and member of the Scheme’s Clinical Governance Committee.

Commenting on her appointment, Mr Michael van der Nest SC, chairperson of the DHMS Board of Trustees said: “Nozipho is a highly trained chief medical officer who has had excellent and extensive experience in operational, corporate governance and leadership roles at a national level in the public and private sector. She will bring a strong combination of professional insights and strategic insights to the leadership position of the largest open medical scheme in South Africa. We look forward to working with Nozipho in her new role.”

Dr Sangweni’s appointment follows a rigorous process by the DHMS Board of Trustees in appointing a successor to Mr Streak who has decided to pursue other opportunities.
